Lacona ny8/10/2023 Someday I hope I can swing back through and see some of the trails farther north. The number of trails available here would take many days to explore, and the country is pretty. Finally, there were a couple clearings where it took a minute to find the trail after you crossed through. While we were there, the mosquitoes and bugs were pretty bad in the lower, moister parts of the Winona Way Trail - make sure you take plenty of bug spray. The railroad is a proud part of our heritage and the Lacona depot was restored as both the Lacona and Sandy Creek Village Offices. Lacona initially grew as a result of the Watertown and Rome railroad which was an important part of early commerce for the region. We hiked on Bill's Belly Trail to Winona Way, crossing a dirt road being regraded, and then took a left on Hiscock trail, and then back on Bill's Belly to the parking lot. The village was founded about 1803 and Lacona was incorporated as a village in 1880. Other than a family who were loading up their horses, we were the only ones there. We parked the car off the dirt/gravel road near Wart Road and Rt 13. There are many miles of trails to choose from, so you'll want to do a bit of planning in advance. We came to Winona State Forest for a hike in late August.
